news_8_1 “Automated-manual” is how the automatic option is described by Honda.

For an engineering-led company like Honda this seems to promise something tasty. Might this be something like the wonderful dual-clutch DSG by Volkswagen Audi. In a word, NO. The telling statistic is that it takes an extra 1.5 seconds to get to 0-60 than in the manual. That’s 20% longer in the sprint to 60. Where does that extra time go?

Well both manual and automatic have 6 gears and the same gear ratios, so there can’t be any differences there. That points to weak electronics-hydraulics behind the clutch and gear change. Rather than making these aspects stronger than the manual like Volkswagen has with the DSG, Honda have released a gearbox weak in this department. All the road tests which I have read of the iShift Civic, use adjectives like, slow, jerky and clumsy when describing the gear change in auto mode. And they all recommend opting for the manual and saving £700 in the process.

Come on Honda. We expected better.
