…along with Jeremy Clarkson, of course.
Whisper it, but I don’t believe this theory that CO2 is causing the world to heat up. I do believe the world is heating up. The world’s temperature has been fluctuating up and down for millions of years, and as a naturally occurring phenomena it will carry on doing so. Rather that spending billions trying to halt climate change, we should try and develop means for coping with the inevitable change.
Of course it is possible to have one leg in both camps. Not believing the CO2 theory and wanting to reduce energy consumption. The latter is good thing no matter what the thinking is. Conservation, economic and geopolitical reasons provide many incentives to be frugal with energy.
I first raised my eyebrow when the government backed the climate change theory. Anytime that lot start preaching, I get suspicious. I have to look at who’s gaining what, and who’s on the make. I saw the C4 film The Great Climate Swindle, and it just seemed to make sense. There are some bits from that program which really hit a nerve (buy it on DVD here):
The Sun itself, is responsible for heating and cooling of the planet. That doesn’t seem too outrageous.
The oceans, volcanoes’ and cows are responsible for the massive majority of CO2 emissions. Man for only about 10%. If this is true, even if we achieve a frankly-impossible 50% reduction, the total reduction would only be 5%.
The South Pole is getting colder.
The world was cooling until the early 70’s. Surely CO2 output has been increasing since at least the industrial revolution?
OK the last one could be explained by a time lag of a few thousand years time. But that would make it even more ridiculous. If any changes we make now aren’t going to be felt for thousands of years, then all the misery of the heating planet will still be seen and felt; the polar bears will still drown; our children and grandchildren will still see and feel the rising sea levels. And when the effects of Gordon Browns ‘green’ taxes and wind farms come into effect, who know if the earth will still be spinning and if the population hadn’t migrated to Mars or even blown each other up in an argument which turned nuclear.
For reasons mentioned above, there should still be a policy of a reduction in energy consumption, but in sensible way. People should switch off electrical equipment, and offices should switch lights and computers fully off at night. But we shouldn’t be obsessed about CO2 reduction that we pursue uneconomic, tasteless and dangerous methods.
• Wind farms are hideous, visually offensive, largely ineffective and completely uneconomic.
• Bio-fuels which are derived from waste products are good. But bio-fuels which are from specifically grown crop are very dangerous and unethical. They will leave the world hungry and thirsty. The crops are being diverted from food supplies pushing up food prices and forcing the poor to starve. The amount of water diverted to grow the massive amounts of crops needed for bio-fuel is greatly increasing water shortages. And more; producing bio-fuel is counterproductive –forests are being cleared to grow the fuels.
• After years of western prosperity, now that the poor Asians are able to jump aboard the luxury liner, we say, sorry chaps but the world will heat up if we don’t all reduce our consumption. And we just can’t afford for you guys to be rich and consume. You can just imagine the stunned faces.
Even if I am completely wrong – and lets face it, it wouldn’t be the first time- and CO2 is responsible to climate change, it will still be impossible to persuade every individual and every government to sacrifice living standards and even life itself for some, to effect a reversal of the climate change trend (possibly only to be seen in thousands of years). In which case, again, we better learn to best deal with the consequences.
You may call me a flat-earther. But I rather see myself a round-earther surrounded by flat-earthers.
