| W124 E-Class is still the best |

And Mercedes know it is. The W124 is the E class series of cars which were sold between 1988 and 1996. Their ruggedness, bullet proof design and sheer quality still casts a deep shadow over Mercedes’ newer cars. These have been compromised by cost cutting, poor build quality and design clumsiness, so much so that Mercedes have been near the bottom of most consumer surveys in the last 10 years. Rumour has it the new E class due out next year will be inspired by and similar to the W124.
And even though these cars have been out of production for over a decade, their reputation is such and they are so sought after, used prices are rising. Especially valued are estate cars, high spec cars and those from 1994 onwards.
An old car to start appreciating needs really enduring appeal. It needs to be a classic. Some Porsche 911 models are similarly valued. The Mercedes CLK (first generation) will probably get there. The big daddy of them all is of course, the McLaren F1. Despite it costing a million (plus taxes) when new, it will cost you more today.
Alas the McLaren is too expensive for me. As an appreciating asset, I’ll take a late W124 Estate.
