Ford released the Focus to a stunned motoring public. Here was car with so many positives and not a negative in sight. Handsome and roomy; fantastic ride, handling and steering; good engines, build quality and reliability.
It had other attributes also. It was classless and cool. People from all sections of society were happy to buy it and be seen in it. My wife, who’s knowledge of cars is below zero, liked it and even considered buying it. Although, judging by her other preferences I’m not sure if this is a compliment.
It was a fine new car, but 2nd hand it is near perfect. People whose budget only stretches to a few thousand pound and want to buy a fun-to-drive reliable car with reasonable running cost, what’s the choice? It’s the ‘reasonable running costs’ together with ‘fun to drive’ which complicates matters. The two don’t seem to meet lower down in the price range.
On a limited budget with these criteria, you can forget brand new. The choice is a used Focus or a new Kia, Hyundai or Chevrolet. It has to be a Focus every time. You might say what about a used Golf or Astra? Golf’s depreciate less from new so you either pay more or get an older car, and Astra’s simply aren’t cool enough. And neither of them have the looks or provide the driving pleasure. Buy a Focus, it won’t disappoint.

Have I put my money where my mouth is? No. My mouth knows no bounds, but my pocket very much does. I would need the deep pockets of Roman Abramowich to always put my money where my mouth goes. However, after the Honda Legend buying experiment, maybe a Focus could be my next one?
Finishing off at a tangent; has anybody been disappointed going into a Chevrolet (UK) showroom? You expect a Chevy to be a big yank tank like you see in the movies; instead you’re confronted by cars looking very much like Daewoo’s. I wonder how many people have taken one look and walked straight back out?
